Is it a good idea to go to a massage therapy school over the summer?

Question: Is it a good idea to go to a massage therapy school over the summer?

(Posted by: Ashley on 2009-05-31 16:13:58)

I was thinking of training as a part time massage therapist this summer. I'm about to graduate from high school and I'm going to need to get a part- time job during college. I heard massage therapists make $20 an hour, is that a good part time profession for a college student?

Yes Ashley, do it.... that was the plan my daughter and I did for her... she then also took a quick nail tech, then esthetician course as well... she is 22 and on her 3rd year of regular college with the ability to attend 3/ 4 time and work only part time with no time or money problems. I am also a Massage Therapist of 12 years now...and in college too. we make a commission of 52% on $65 - $88 treatments , so our cut is $33 - $45 per hour depending on if massage or one of the fancy mud wrap things...LOL.... plus great tips. Heck, even just pulling a Saturday, which is always booked solid, is worth $300-400 The Spa has wi-fi and she often just brings laptop & homework with her in case of any long breaks or appointment cancellations... or we may go home or run errands as long as we are back in time for next appt. One of the tricks is finding a fair place to work from...some will try to abuse you, make you stay there all day whether you have appts. or not and clean for free or pay you low hourly wages...say NO!!! and keep looking. Most states are now around 500 hour requirement for licensing and schools are very affordable....you shoudn't have to pay more than $6 - 8 grand for a program...some even have pell grants available.

How much is the class to be a massage therapist? I would think you can make some money at it, if there is a place in the town you are going to college in where you could work. If you're going to try to be a freelance, it would likely be more work than it's worth while you're going to school. But the advisor at the massage school could help you know what to expect. If nothing else, you could charge your classmates and dormmates a few bucks for a good massage.

I think this is a great idea. Speaking only for myself, I am mostly home bound. And being an older female, I wish I could find someone that would come to my house. Some days the pain in my neck and shoulders is almost unbearable. If you do this, make sure you advertise where people who are older can find out. Good Luck

I'm currently taking a massage therapy course which is about 60 credits, roughly 20 months of full-time study. it's something to do if you're looking long term. how intensive is the training for the part-time massage therapy? i guess if it isn't as long it could be worth it if you plan on doing it throughout college.

Not sure where you're at, but I doubt you could get through any massage therapy training program over the summer months. Most programs are 15-24 months in duration depending on a state's (US) requirements. There are some programs that might finish up within 4 months if you go full time. Costs are several thousand dollars per program also. Most massage therapists who work for themselves make between 35 and 85 dollars per hour, but they have supplies and other overhead to cover. Working for someone else; pay scale ends up being less per hour. I doubt it's a feasible part time profession for you as a college student due to the training involved.

You can make $20 an hour at some places but you also have to consider that when you don't have clients you only get paid minimum wage so you have to be good and get repeat clients. Massage school usually take about 6 months and is a 500 hour program.
