Question: Nursing vs. massage therapy? (Posted by: Kayla on 2009-05-28 09:21:22) I'm a junior in high school and I've started to think about possible careers. I really don't want to go to college. I'd rather go to technical school. How long does it take to become a nurse or massage therapist? What are the hours like? Salary? Benefits? Experiences anyone? thanks :) Answers: Posted by: Shirley P on 2009-05-28, 17:57:07 As a licensed massage therapist; here is what you can expect: School is anywhere between 15 months and 24 months in duration. There is not a lot of financial aid available for massage therapy programs, but check your local schools anyway. Hourly wage is approx. 30-85 dollars per hour depending on location, but remember that there are a lot of costs that bring that figure down considerably. No benefits unless you work in a medical facility, or possibly a larger spa. Full time in massage therapy is considered about 24 hours due to the physical labor involved. There are many opportunities for massage therapists: owning their own business, working in spas -hotels-resorts-cruises, working in medical facilities or for a chiropractor. I know many people who do both...... to get the wage of massage therapy and the benefits of nursing. If you don't like school, you will hate nursing school, but its a great career for only 1 to 2 years of school. Her pay rate for RN is in the 20/ hr I do believe. You should just start by getting your CNA to see if you like it. Im pretty sure you will have to take an anatomy class wich will help with your decision of being a massage therapist. I live in a small town, but everyone I have ever known to be in massage therapy couldn't get a job in that field. So good luck! oh ya, and nurses have to touch poop and stuff, word to the wise Posted by: massagegeek on 2009-05-30, 19:11:46 Massage and nursing are two really different careers. You will have to go to college to become a nurse. I don't know what the salaries are but I would guess they make like $30 an hour or so -but I could be wrong. Massage school is usually about a 6 month to one year program. Most massage therapists start their own business. There are some jobs out there but jobs start at $15 an hour. You only get paid that when you have clients. You get paid minimum wage when you don't have a client. You can make more if you are motivated to get and keep clients coming in.
