Question: Would massage therapy for depression and anxiety? (Posted by: mousey on 2009-04-09 19:06:22) I have never had a massage but I have so much tension in my shoulders and back that I feel like there are rocks under my skin. Would massage help and how do I know if they are a trainned to help with mental health issues? Also how long does it take and how do they make you feel comfortable and not embarressed? Answers: Posted by: Chan C on 2009-04-09, 19:13:26 Yes ,of course !massage is the fast way make you feel comfortable , when you begin the massage, you will feel wonderful , you can learn how to massage by yourself , it is very easy tcmdiscovery.com/ Tuina-Massage/ index.html Posted by: Amanda M on 2009-04-09, 19:14:34 Trust me, they've seen it all! They won't talk to you at all and will make you feel very comfortable. If you have this much anxiety, take half of an anxiety pill prior to your massage appointment. I've only met a couple who have had any training with those sorts of things, and they worked with the dying (cancer treatment and hospice), the traumatized (veterans hospitals).... But if you feel less "rocky " in the shoulders, thats the criteria I would use for determining if it works for you.... And they really can't "make you feel comfortable " but they will usually try to not make you feel uncomfortable. Dont be afaid to say "hey, I would prefer to be touched this way....or have that covered etc. " Posted by: Thomas on 2009-04-10, 00:45:45 While massage therapists are no trained in and specific routines for depression or anxiety they can help you relax and feel physically better. Studies I have seen seem to indicate that steam treatments hot and cold hydrotherapy and exercise seem to yield the best nature treatments for depression. Posted by: Stef Von B on 2009-04-10, 01:28:22 Massage therapists are not trained to give advice for mental health issues. Legally we can't even give our personal experience. We can refer you out to a therapist but nothing else. Massage therapy helps relax the body (obviously) which in turn creates a healthier mind in order to help with any issues. Massage also releases a great deal of toxins which allows to help the body in further healing. The length of a massage depends on where you go and the type of massage you receive. Generally they last about an hour. Therapists follow strict guidelines when doing the massage when it comes to keeping the client covered. It's called draping. The only area exposed is the area being worked. If you are at all uncomfortable with an area being worked (example, your glutes) be sure to communicate that with your therapist. They will accommodate you! All work can be done over the sheet if necessary! I hope I helped, don't be nervous about getting a massage. It's very beneficial and the therapist is only there to help! Good luck! Posted by: Off Beat on 2009-04-10, 10:25:05 Believe me it won't go that easily. You have to drive it out.
